On question I am often asked as a paranormal investigator is " Why do you guys investigate in the dark?"

Below is how I tackle that question!

There is one other idea put forth by Josh P Warren of L.E.M.U.R. Paranormal in regards as to why ghosts may manifest during the night more often and it may also shed some light ( no pun intended, i swear!! ) on why we as investigators, " go dark".

His idea coincides very well with the Cemi Field Theory's Electro Magnetic Model of Consciousness in believing that ghosts and spirits are composed of or heavily utilize electromagnetic fields that are low power low frequency fields in the range of 40hz or less by stating that during the day, when the planet is facing the sun, the sun's energy and radiation is bombarding our magnetosphere, pushing it down, fluxing it, bending it inwards towards the planet's surface.

This extremely powerful "bending" creates electromagnetic " noise", which can at times be powerful enough to disrupt our machines and electronic, and could possibly make it difficult or impossible for lower power electromagnetic fields (ghosts) to manifest fully or completely throughout the daylight hours while the magnetosphere is being depressed.

At night, when the planet is turned away from the sun, the magnetosphere resumes it natural shape and its " noise" lifts, clearing the field for any other EMF field, very similar to driving through a tunnel with your radio on. The radio signal is still there and coming through, you just have a hard time hearing it for all of the static created by the interference of the tunnel.

That could be one reason that entities manifest primarily at night or in the evening hours, however it doesn't account for all experiences naturally and there could be a nother factor that we arent aware of if the theory holds true, such as higher power fields and higher frequencies.

As investigators I think we naturally go dark for various reasons, the most obvious is to eliminate false positives, to recreate the environment of the experience ( most are at night but some are during the day time), and to, yes as Mark stated, have a bit of fun. Also, I think that going dark has one other benefit that falls along the lines of elimating false positives:

Reducing EMF pollution from appliacances, light bulbs, etc and clearing the field on a micro level rather than the macro level of the planet facing away from the sun.
